freight industryThe price of air freight is regulated by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which continues to have, along with its rules regulating transportation, an ‘Official Tariff Policy’ published under the title ‘The Air Cargo Tariff’ (TACT). Air freight prices are generally extracted from meetings between the IATA Regional Tariff Committees and are subject to international intergovernmental tariff level agreements by route or country. Those air freight companies wishing to implement or apply a new tariff need permission from IATA, and these tariffs will also be subject to government approval by the relevant country. But now they are usually used as guide lines and sometimes no effort is made to implement their use by either IATA or governments. Today, however, the many air freight companies on the main routes are gradually ignoring IATA tariffs because there is so much competition, but they also continue to provide a general guideline for those less established markets around the world. An air freight rate of one fee per kilo of cargo is mostly applied when most goods are concerned (and discounts are given for volumes over 100 and 500 kilos).

While specific product prices are available, these are the exception and are lower than usual prices as they are designed to facilitate air freight on specific trade routes for certain types of cargo. What will occur is a given product and its cost will be submitted to IATA by the air freight company and they would in turn gain permission to apply the product cost to the government of the relevant countries on a given route. There are also class rates for such commodities as human remains, live animals and perishable cargo (fresh food etc.) in addition to the specific commodity rates, and there are specific rules that need to be followed for calculating the charges for each category of commodity shown in this chart. In general, however, the rules are based on the country of origin for which the products are intended and what sort of product they are.

There are also air freight handling rates based on weight for non-unit load traffic and per unit for unit loads, and IATA used to set these rates, but they are now set between the handling terminals more often than not.
