Sleep apnea is the most common form of obstructive sleep apnea in adults. In adults, the most common mechanism of sleep apnea is obesity and excessive weight, which usually are related with weak soft tissue of the oral cavity and throat area. When breathing is repeatedly obstructed during sleep, it can result in a number of complications such as sleepwalking, daytime sleepiness, exhaustion, irritability, hyperactivity, and poor concentration. Sleep apnea can also be caused by having a narrow airway or by a collapse of the soft tissues of the throat and mouth during sleep. The primary symptom of sleep apnea in adults is loud snoring or abnormal silences while breathing. Sleep apnea can be divided into two types: central sleep apnea (CSA) and mixed sleep apnea. CSA is the result of an obstruction of the throat and/or airway caused by soft tissues of the throat and the tongue. Whereas mixed sleep apnea occurs due to the occurrence of multiple obstructions at different locations and the airways are obstructed simultaneously. Mixtures of both OSA and CNSA are very common. In the majority of patients with OSA, the cause of the obstruction is unknown; however, in patients with mixed OSA, the main cause is still unclear.

Sleep apnea and cardiovascular disease have many interconnecting causative factors. Obstructive sleep apnea increases the risk of cardio-vascular disease, such as stroke, transient ischemic attack, heart disease, and heart failure. There is a relationship between obstructive sleep apnea and the risk of non-smoker, non-obese, and overweight men. The risk is increased two times as much in women after the age of 45. Obstructive sleep apnea and stroke both increase the risk of sudden cardiac death. Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States.
