The practice of massage therapy dates back hundreds of years in Egypt. Today, there are many forms of massage therapy that are being practiced. Therapists can provide various techniques to their clients based on the needs and wants of their clients. A skilled massage therapist can perform a massage in minutes or hours depending on his/her expertise. These therapists are usually certified by the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA). These therapists also have additional training and certification by other bodies such as the European Society of Massage Therapists (ESHMT), the International Organization of Professional and Scientific Massagers (OISTMS), and the International Association of Sports Therapists (IASTM).

Massage therapy can be performed by a professional therapist who is also known as a massage doctor. A masseuse can also perform massages on their own. Massages can be offered to people of all ages ranging from infants to old people. Although massages are usually offered to relieve tension and stress, they may also be used to increase relaxation and reduce pain.
